You're extremely confused about Debian version numbers/names.

Potato is 2.2 (r0,r1,r2,r3,r4,r5, or r6)

Potato is currently considered "stable". It is completely frozen in every way
(and has been since 2000) apart from security bug fixes. Since it has been
completely frozen since 2000, all of the software is extremely out of date.

For potato, the number after the r signifies that is a release with important
security bug fixes. Since 2000, 7 releases (2.2 r0 - 2.2 r6) of potato have
been made.

Woody (aka "testing") _will_ be 3.0. It is not fully frozen yet. The software
is pretty up to date.

Even though woody is not _considered_ "stable", it is pretty damn stable. I
would suggest it's more stable than many rival distributions.

Sounds like the mouse is using the wrong protocol. Just edit
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in a text editor. It should be a one line change.
