This seems as you didn't set up a gateway?
normally, since your on a private network, it seems to me the route
command should give you something like
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255 U 0 0 eth0
default my_gateway 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 eth0
with my_gateway replaced by the ip-adress of your gateway?
Can you ping to other machines on the 192.168.1 subnet?
