backlight off w/o suspend

For the backlight off w/o suspend issue:
i'm using plain old xset for this ;)
I've got an icon on my panel for "xset dpms force off"
which does the job fine.

This is also use this with acpi sleep.
Because currently acpi does not turn of the display when i put the
laptop into sleep mode; but when it wakes up... (switching to console
and back to x will turn it on again then...) - but when i first used
xset, then issue sleep (by closing the lid ;) and wake the system, the
screen will go on again ;)

Any idea how root could connect onto the currently active X directly to
trigger this?

Greetings,
Erich
