Hack the source... ;-)  Unfortunately, I don't think there's any other
way, other than to be patient and wait for the esd developers to add
support.

It looks like it still uses esd.  There was talk about using aRts, but I
don't think that has happened.

Maybe one of the programs is trying to open the sound device
exclusively.  See /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/FAQ.  I seem to remember
there was a workaround for this, but I can't locate it right now.
