The ALSA API changed between ALSA 0.5 and 0.9.  esd-alsa uses the 0.5
API, so you won't be able to use esd-alsa.

alsaplayer should work though.  You probably have an older version.  I
think the 0.9 API support was added in 0.99.36 or thereabouts.  The
latest version in unstable is 0.99.56.
