I'm using devfs, and have these devices:
ls -la /dev/sound/
total 0
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Jan 1 1970 dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 0 Jan 1 1970 mixer
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 16 Jan 1 1970 mixer1

lsmod:
...
trident 26848 1
ac97_codec 9664 0 [trident]
...

Dmesg:

I don't have any sndstat devices... and wouln't know what they are used for...

Kernel config is just NO OSS, and load 'trident' as module...

/etc/modules just contains 'trident' no options or anything...

Check if it's sharing IRQ's with something else...
check for running ESD or other sound daemon processes...

fuser /dev/dsp ???
