Perhaps kdm tries to grab the sound card and doesn't let go?  Recent
versions of alsa seem to be having problems sharing the sound card, at
least in my experience.  (Just a guess.  I don't use kdm.)  What happens
if you use xdm instead?

To check that you have the permissions right, run amixer.  If it's
right, you'll get a dump of the mixer settings.  If it's not, you'll get
an error message.

Then try playing a wav file using "play" (play is part of the sox
package), or some similar program, from the command line.
