Asus L8400 with S3 savage: X-problem

Hi Everybody!

I have the above notebook (woody installed) with the following vga-device:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86C270-294 Savage/MX-/IX (rev
11)

I have the following problem: X seems to work fine, but it has problems playing
media files, like .rm, .avi.

I tried rvplayer (from rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2_rpm) with several
.rm-files, also aviplay (version 0.53) with serveral .avi-files.
After a few minutes (not more than 20m) X freezes for 1 or 2 seconds, an
the sound is repeated during this time periodically. After that first
freeze, the next comes only a few seconds later.
Even with no sound (kernel modules not loaded) still the same.

I tried: kernel 2.2.19, 2.4.7, 2.4.8, XFree 3.3.6 and XFree 4.1.0,
savage_drv.o version 1.1.16 and 1.1.19 (from
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html)

I also have set
Section "Device"
  BoardName "AutoDetected"
  Driver "savage"
  Identifier "Device[0]"
  Option "dpms"
  Option "NoAccel"
  Option "shadowFB"
  Option "ShadowStatus" "on"
  Option "SWCursor"
  VendorName "AutoDetected"
EndSection
in my XF86Config-4

I tried the options in various combinations, still the same problem.
Also exporting SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50=true did not help.
I think, due to the fact that this problem is not obvious, it might be
a bug in savage_drv.o. But I still hope that someone here can help me,
perhaps I overlooked something.

Thanks
 Andreas
