Ok, sounds like you don't have a screen defined in your serverlayout
section. Mine looks like this:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier      "Default Layout"
        Screen          "Default Screen"
        InputDevice     "Generic Keyboard"
        InputDevice     "ps2-mouse"
EndSection
