I agree, the problem might be the routing table.  Check it with netstat -r
(or route -n).  Mine looks like:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags   MSS Window  irtt Iface
192.168.34.5    *               255.255.255.255 UH       40 0          0 ppp0
default         192.168.34.5    0.0.0.0         UG       40 0          0 ppp0

Well that's with the modem over ppp0, but eth0 should look similar.
Is that what you checked when you said there's nothing there.

Anyway, my guess is the solution is simple: edit /etc/pcmcia/network.opts,
which is where the IP address and routing info goes.  The file should be
straightforward to follow I hope.
