skipping fsck at boot? (was Re: BUG?! no pcmcia ethernet on battery power)

i've taken the liberty of changing the subject line -- should have
done that a while back.

i haven't had very good luck w/ suspend, unfortunately, and i've used
a fair number of laptops. i haven't actually used suspend w/ the
current laptop i'm using, so may be i should try that though. thanks
for the suggestion. (i have to wonder though...if i were to use
suspend, would fsck get run often enough? i don't really have a clue
as to the answer.) well, however that turns out, perhaps i should
talk to someone appropriate regarding adding the capability to
configure one's system to ask whether to skip fsck at boot time.

i tend to connect to a number of different networks, and it ends up
being much easier to shutdown and reboot when i go from one network to
another. i wish support for multiple environments was much better,
but sadly that is not the case. my latest fantasy for getting this to
work has to do w/ using the seemingly-abandonded overlay filesystem:

  http://home.att.net/~artnaseef/ovlfs/ovlfs.html

to implement support for different sets of configuration files --
e.g. different XF86Config files, packet filter settings, etc.

i also heard from someone that something similar might be possible
using coda -- speaking of which, i don't see any packages for it any
more. does anyone know what happened to them?

i wonder if "mobile linux" addresses this at all...

btw, out of curiosity, why do you mention "lucky enough not to run
windows"? is there some technical problem that prevents suspend from
working well if windows is installed?
