Thanks to David Hinds <dhinds@zen.stanford.edu>, the problem is solved. The FastEthernet LiveWire uses a completely different chipset than the 10 Mb/s card and needs another driver. Here is what I've put in config.opts:

card "New Media Live Wire Ethernet"
   version "New Media Corporation", "LiveWire 10/100", "Fast Ethernet"
   bind "pcnet_cs"
