PPP Not Installed Error on Starting Kppp

I'm running Debian 2.1 (slink) with KDE 1.1.2 build from source. My kernel isbuilt from 2.2.14 source to include ppp as a loadable kernel among other
options. However, when I start Kppp, I get a dialog box inidicating ppp is not
available in the kernel built-in or as a module. But, after clicking 'Ok', Kppp
starts and everything runs as expected. Any suggestions as to why the error
dialog appears? Thanks.
