That's correct. Please rename only br.po to pt_BR.po.

Please note that "br" should be used for Breton. For
Brazilian Portuguese, "pt_BR" should be used. That's
not to be confused with "pt", for Portuguese (European).
These are three different acronyms for three different
languages.

(Now, it raises another question: if an original br.po file
existed before, maybe it have been overwritten when the
pt_BR translation was added to the package, with the wrong
filename.)
