Ian Murdock, fondatore del Debian project, ci ha lasciati il 28th December
2015 nella sua casa di San Francisco. Aveva 42 anni.
Ian Murdock, the founder of the Debian project, passed away on 28th December
2015 at his home in San Francisco. He was 42.
E' difficile ingigantire il contributo che Ian ha apportato al Software Libero. Ha guidato
il Debian Project dal suo inizio nel 1993 al 1996, ha scritto il Manifesto Debian
nel gennaio del 1994 ed ha allevato/cresciuto (nurtured) il progetto novello (fledgling nel suo significato figurativo cfr. wordreference) attraverso i suoi studi alla Purdue University.
It is difficult to exaggerate Ian's contribution to Free Software. He led the
Debian Project from its inception in 1993 to 1996, wrote the Debian manifesto
in January 1994 and nurtured the fledgling project throughout his studies at
Purdue University.
Ian ha proseguito diventando il direttore fondatore di Linux International, CTO del
Free Standards Group e successivamente della Linux Foundation, e leader del Project Indiana
presso Sun Microsystems, che descrisse come "prendere la lezione che Linux ha
portato al sistema operativo e impartirla a Solaris"
Ian went on to be founding director of Linux International, CTO of the Free
Standards Group and later the Linux Foundation, and leader of Project Indiana
at Sun Microsystems, which he described as "taking the lesson that Linux has

Il sucesso di Debian fa da testamento alla visione di Ian. Ha inspirato innumerevoli persone
in tutto il mondo a contribuire il proprio tempo libero e le proprie abilità. Più di 350
distribuzioni risultano derivate da Debian.
Debian's success is testament to Ian's vision. He inspired countless people
around the world to contribute their own free time and skills. More than 350
distributions are known to be derived from Debian.
Per queste ragioni dedichiamo Debian 9 "stretch" a Ian.
