The Debian community is pleased to celebrate its 19th birthday since Ian Murdock's original
<a href="http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.linux.development/msg/a32d4e2ef3bcdcc6";>founding
announcement</a>.
Quoting from the
<a href="http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/project-history/ch-intro.en.html";>official project history</a>:
<q>The Debian Project was officially founded by Ian Murdock on August 16th, 1993. At that
time, the whole concept of a 'distribution' of Linux was new. Ian intended Debian to be
a distribution which would be made openly, in the spirit of Linux and GNU.</q>

19 Jahre ist es her, seit Ian Murdock die Gründung von Debian GNU/Linux
<a href="http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.linux.development/msg/a32d4e2ef3bcdcc6";>angekündigt</a> hat.
Wie in der
<a href="http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/project-history/ch-intro.en.html";>offiziellen Projektgeschichte</a>
zu lesen ist, wurde das Debian-Projekt offiziell am 16. August 1993 gegründet.
<q>Zu dieser Zeit war das ganze Konzept einer Linux-Distribution neu. Ian wollte,
dass Debian eine offene Distribution im Geiste von Linux und GNU ist.</q>

A lot has happened to the project and its community in the past nineteen
years. There have been eleven releases - most recently <a href="$(HOME)/News/2011/20110205a">
Debian 6.0 <q>Squeeze</q></a> in February 2011 - and a huge amount of free software packaged. The
current <q>unstable</q> branch consists of more than 37,000 binary packages
for the amd64 architecture alone - over 46 GB of Free/Libre Software!
Since last year's birthday new steps to portability have been made;
<a href="http://www.debian.org/ports/";>11 official ports</a> are now available,
amongst which Debian/kFreeBSD deserves a special mention for successfully
integrating a non-Linux kernel within the project.

In den letzten neunzehn Jahren hat sich viel im Projekt und in der Gemeinschaft
getan. Es gab elf Veröffentlichungen – die jüngste ist
<a href="$(HOME)/News/2011/20110205a">Debian 6.0 <q>Squeeze</q></a>
vom Februar 2011 – und eine riesige Anzahl an paketierter freier Software. Der
derzeitige <q>Unstable</q>-Zweig besteht aus mehr als 37.000 Binärpaketen
alleine für die AMD64-Architektur – über 46 GByte Freie/Libre Software! Seit
dem letzten Jubiläum wurden außerdem Fortschritte in der Portabilität gemacht;
jetzt gibt es <a href="http://www.debian.org/ports/";>elf offizielle Portierungen</a>,
von denen Debian/kFreeBSD eine gesonderte Erwähnung verdient hat, da es einen
Nicht-Linux-Kernel in das Projekt integriert.

Debian 7.0, codenamed Wheezy, was frozen in July 2012, following a time-based freeze policy,
and currently the main activity throughout the project is squashing the
remaining RC bugs. Again, Debian will strive to maintain its goals of technical
excellence, accountability, and above all, freedom.

Debian 7.0 mit Codenamen Wheezy wurde gemäß einer zeitbasierten
Freeze-Richtlinie im Juli 2012 eingefroren und die derzeitige Hauptaktivität
des Projekts besteht darin, die restlichen Unstimmigkeiten des
Veröffentlichungskandidaten zu beseitigen. Debian wird wieder seine Ziele
einer technischen Güte, Verantwortlichkeit und vor allem Freiheit verfolgen.

This has been made possible by the efforts of the strong community developed around Debian.
Besides more than 1,000 Debian Developers and Maintainers from all over the globe,
there are in excess of 12,000 registered accounts for the
<a href="http://alioth.debian.org/";>Alioth collaboration platform</a>, and that
doesn't even include all those people contributing with <a href="http://i18n.debian.org/";>translations</a>
or <a href="http://www.debian.org/Bugs/";>bug reports</a> (and sometimes patches for them)
and all those users helping others via our <a href="http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/";>mailing lists</a>,
<a href="http://forums.debian.net/";>forums</a> and <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/IRC/";>IRC channels</a>.

Das alles ist möglich geworden durch die Anstrengungen einer starken
Gemeinschaft, die sich rund um das Debian-Projekt entwickelt hat. Neben mehr
als 1000 Debian-Entwickler und -Betreuer aus aller Welt sind über 12.000

registriert und das schließt noch nicht einmal alle Menschen ein, die mit

Korrekturen dafür) und all den Benutzern, die auf unseren

<a href="http://wiki.debian.org/IRC/";>IRC-Kanälen</a> Anderen Unterstützung
leisten.
