Each x-display-manager postinstall changes the "default"
x-display-manager by overwriting /etc/X11/default-display-manager in
a sort of annoying reinvention of the alternatives system.

What it says is "edit each of their init scripts in /etc/init.d, and
disable the check for a default display manager" - that is, the
default-display-manager check in that init script.
Oh, perhaps you're reading the "and" as "and then"? I hadn't seen
that interpretation... in that case, maybe it would be clearer as
"edit each of their init scripts in /etc/init.d, disabling the check
for a default display manager".
