Dear Felix,

Thanks again for your help, but I've already given up. As I said, I
downloaded the source for the most recent version directly from x.org and
compiled it myself. The ABI version number matched Jessie. I had to
'downgrade' the xserver in K7.6.1 to Jessie. It successfully loaded the
module (as reported by the log) but it's behavior was sluggish, similar to
when I used one of the fb labels at the boot: prompt, but, worse, it was
also glitchy, with pixels occasionally being drawn on the screen that
didn't belong there. I suppose I may have failed to install one or more
packages in the downgrade, although I don't understand how that would
cause the symptoms I observed.

FYI, fourteen (14) of the 39 drivers in Wheezy got dropped with Jessie:

apm_drv.so <
ark_drv.so <
chips_drv.so <
glint_drv.so <
i128_drv.so <
i740_drv.so <
		   >	qxl_drv.so
rendition_drv.so <
s3_drv.so <
s3virge_drv.so <
sis_drv.so <
tga_drv.so <
tseng_drv.so <
vboxvideo_drv.so <
voodoo_drv.so <

Thanks, again.

Best regards,
Andrew
