RE: Apt-get *stopped working*: "Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1) error"

I managed to resolve this a couple of weeks ago but until now did not
find the time and/or simply forgot to update the list.

The clue was in the log file of my music server software (Squeeze Center
from Slim Devices / Logitech) when the server was trying to update my
last.fm profile:
[08-09-07 15:05:43.1280]
Slim::Plugin::AudioScrobbler::Plugin::_handshakeError (358) Error
handshaking with Last.fm: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML
4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd";>
<html><head><META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache"><meta
content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" http-equiv="content-
type"><title>Attention : erreur de configuration DNS</title></
head><body><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight:
bold;">&nbsp;<big><big><big><big>&nbsp; Attention !!!</big></big></
big></big></span><br></div><br><br>Si

In short - my ISP had changed the address of their DNS server. Normally
this would not be a problem as I use DHCP (and I had no issues on other
machines as reported) on all of my machines, but my knoppix server goes
through a two stage boot sequence using the pivot_root command. And the
new address of the DNS server was not being used for whatever reason
(but I could still ping domain names like yahoo.com).

Anyway, after editing resolv.conf apt-get worked as before.

Hi,

Looks like there is a broken file inside a (tranparent?) proxy in
between. Another possiobility is tht your /var filesystem is full, in
which case

apt-get clean

could help.

from there to other machines (via apt-get) this afternoon. And same
thing with other sources. The first few lines seem to indicate that the
download went fine, but then there was a gzip error. First time I've
seen something like this. An afternoon of looking on the web has not
brought a solution (i.e. tried apt-get clean, changing http to ftp etc).
