RE: Apt-get *stopped working*: "Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1) error"

Thanks for the reply Klaus (that I only discovered today as it got
banished to the junk e-mail folder for some strange reason).

There is no proxy between my Knoppix machine and my router; on a ubuntu
machine (actually a VM hosted on a mac, bridged networking), I can
apt-get without any issues. I'll check /var when I get back tonight,
but I already tried an 'apt-get clean' IIRC (but no harm in trying
again).

Oh well looks like something has magically broken, but not sure I'll
find the time to reinstall :(

Thanks anyway.

Hi,

Looks like there is a broken file inside a (tranparent?) proxy in
between. Another possiobility is tht your /var filesystem is full, in
which case

apt-get clean

could help.

from there to other machines (via apt-get) this afternoon. And same
thing with other sources. The first few lines seem to indicate that the
download went fine, but then there was a gzip error. First time I've
seen something like this. An afternoon of looking on the web has not
brought a solution (i.e. tried apt-get clean, changing http to ftp etc).
