Re: A few comments about Knoppix 5.1

Happy New Year!!!!!!!

I am really glad that the ndiswrapper kernel module works out of the
box. Thank You for that.

Gilpel, this release has some very important high points as well...
ntfs-3g for one thing. Reliable read/write on Windows drives. That is
quite frankly... a milestone.

I think this kind of thing can be avoided with a bit more formal alpha testing.
I would not mind if Klaus threw an alpha release that expired out for
testing. Would anyone else? That is my suggestion. Make available to
the community at large... limited use alpha testing versions.

The way I see it...
Knoppix-autodetect is yours Klaus. There, in that file's execution,
you could refuse to run any further in an alpha. Sure it is open
source, but your distribution of it is yours. And your Alpha releases
of it are as well. I understand that. Do others?

If Knoppix alphas did refuse to run after a given date, there would be
no point in putting it up all over the place. It would insure the
purpose stayed with the iso image, a limited release meant for
testing. By making all startups look for a file ALPHA in the root, and
only acting to prematurely shutdown if it is present and the current
date is after the date stored inside the file ALPHA, I don't see that
the harm would outweigh the benefits. Anyone really determined to run
it can just change the clock on their computer, and pull any
networking out.

Pardon me if this has been discussed before. Klaus has mentioned on
this list that there are just so many changes going on... that it was
a big reason for the long release cycle this time.

I have a one problem I need to report though. The virtual desktops. If
I click Desktop 2, 3, or 4, the whole taskbar goes away. This may be
related to the problem with Klipper gilpel. I have to use the Ctrl-F1
hotkey. Am I the only one with this problem? I reproduced it on a
Dvd/Cdrom only Desktop.

Klaus... Thank You for working hard to produce Knoppix 5.1 during the
Holidays. I am sure others when they think about it, will come to
appreciate that part of the Knoppix formula.

Happy New Year!
John
