what version of qemu are you using?

You need the "home=" parameter for your image and the "desktop=" parameter 
for a different preselection of a window manager (the cheatcodes are presented 
after pressing F2 and F3 when you see the boot screen).  

With "knoppix 2 noudev" you get a console to do a manual setup.
