Follow up on memory stick:
I reformatted the memory stick with Sony's proprietary system
which seems to be a variant of vfat. The stick still can be
accessed using the method Vic furnished.
I added this line in /etc/fstab:
/dev/sda /mnt/mem vfat user,rw,umask=000,noatime 0 0
The problem was not having that umask=000 in there. I'm still
learning, going on my eighth week with Linux, and starting my
third week with Knoppix.
