The network cards are just named in the order of detection/module loading.
There is no "fixed" sequence of numbers. So, this may explain why in your
installed system the sequence differs from the one Knoppix uses.

This may just be another interrupt/apic problem. Have you tried booting with

knoppix noapic acpi=off

?

It shouldn't hang, though.

Anyways, I'm updating both kernels soon and releasing an update in the
beginning of January (no promises).
