[debian-knoppix] kernel recompile

ok, i'm missing something simple.
it's been a while since i've recompiled a kernel and there must be something 
i'm forgetting.
i run 

	make clean
	make xconfig
	make-kpkg kernel-image

then i install with 

	dpkg -i kernel-image-2.4.23*

everything seems to go ok.

i update lilo.conf to include the new kernel and rerun 

	lilo
.
it starts to boot, but the screen goes blank and then nothing.

suggestions?
