[debian-knoppix] Security considerations

The following questions are not very Knoppix specific and were mostly run
using Slackware. But I suppose the problems would be the same if I had used
Knoppix installed and... maybe their solution could help someday.

Does a desktop standalone need an SSH server to negociate a secure connection?
I though so, than I removed the server and Mozilla's lock locks up just the
same on a secure page.

Again about security. Recently, my connexion to newsgroups wasn't working as I
was getting a message saying that the 3 connections limit was reached. The
Stop light was gray, indicating that no connection was open. I tried Knode
with the same results. I tried this and that and then rebooted: 3 connections
were open just the same!

Yesterday, I was writing a message with Kmail when I needed some information.
I went on the net, then checked my email, got a coffee and, when I was back,
the email I was writing had disappeared. (Not in the trash bin and I even
made a search on the title.)

I have two firewalls: on hardware in the modem -- a Gnet BB0060 DSL modem --
and one software on the computer. Both accept only established connexions.
(The one on the Gnet doesn't even return pings.)

My only two open ports are for dhcp and the printer, serving only localhost.

My feeling is somebody, probably with some kind of access to my telephone
line, gets in my computer by leaving the ports open after a connection is
established.

Any way around this? I suppose a secure connexion to my provider would help,
but it's rather uncommon here.
