You could try booting with knoppix vga=normal which disables the console framebuffer. Maybe that caused the problem?
Didn't try that, but now I am happy and I run X at 1024x768 :) Earliar it was 800x600 and X some times locks up the system completly. I remember seeing the error logs which said lockup. But I do not have the exact message with me right now :(
