I saw his talk at debconf in Oslo, and I liked it.  I talked to him
afterwards, and he emphasized that the many people making "custom
debian distributions" should do what they can to merge their efforts.
He did not want to take responsibility for this effort himself,
but to remind others to generalize their tools when possible.

Although Knoppix appears to be his primary focus, there are
other projects (such as skolelinux in Norway) that could benefit 
from a generalized set of installation tools.  Skolelinux has
written a "no questions asked" installer for debian, to make
life simpler for novice administrators.  A Knoppix-installer
could be seen in the same light, given the lack of flexibility
once you have burned to CD.
