[debian-knoppix] [maybe OT] Inclusion of Java, and softmodem support
I am putting together a remastered Knoppix suitable for computer
science students of the local universities. Here area a couple of
questions in case anybody else has already been where I'm going:
- inclusion of BlackDown's java and javac port. Basically
blackdown.org states that their port is subject to the same
condition as Sun's product, then Sun's FAQ states that the Standard
Edition Developer's Kit may be redistributed as part value-added
products (such as magazines), then blackdown.org re-states that only
the Runtime Environment is redistributable. I asked BlackDown and
am waiting/hoping for a reply; in the meantime if anybody has
disentangled the matter I'd love to hear about it. (Yes, I could
use Kaffe, it even supports AWT which the curriculum requires; but
I'd like to use the BlueJ learning environment and it requires at
least j2sdk1.3.)
- lots (yeah, too many) people have softmodems and depend on them. If
anybody is working on detection and use of softmodems, I'd like to
help, or if nobody is working on it, I'll have a try myself. I
checked the license of two of the more widespread models, Conexant
and Lucent, and both allow for redistribution. I haven't checked
Motorola SM56 yet, but it works up to kernel 2.4.5 and requires a
kernel hack afterwards.
