[debian-knoppix] Advice for using Knoppix on 50 Pentium computers
Greetings,
First off, I want to say that I am very impressed with Knoppix. I
originally saw it about a year ago and thought it was pretty neat. It
wasn't until a week ago when I realized how neat it really is. With that
out of the way, here's the real story...
I'm working with a non-profit, volunteer project to provide about 50
computers to the developing country of Bolivia. Bolivia is on the
southwest border of Brazil in South America. Spanish is the official
language.
Most of the computers I'm dealing with fall in these ranges:
- Pentium 100Mhz-200Mhz
- 64MB-128MB RAM
- 1GB-2GB hard drive
- floppy drive
- 24x-48x CDROM drive
After testing many distributions, I settled on Knoppix, much to my
surprise! The biggest benefit of Knoppix is the hardware autodetection.
The computers being setup used will be using an unknown keyboard, mouse
and monitor. In other words, these components will change before they
are shipped. The other benefit of Knoppix is that it can run off the
CDROM drive, which saves a lot of installation time. It also prevents
accidental erasure and an easy way to upgrade in the future. With the
fast CDROM drives, the speed differece between a hard drive install of
Knoppix and running off the CD is not worth the extra work, IMHO. So,
the computers will be running off of the CD.
There are three things I'm supposed to provide and what I believe will
work to achieve that:
1. internet access - mozilla, konqueror
2. office suite - openoffice
3. educational software - ???
The "educational software" is not terribly important, but, kids may be
using the computers at some time. The main users will be adults looking
to learn some computer skills; so, internet access and an office suite
are essential.
Also, I'm using KDE as I think the added functionality is worth it. I'm
also running the desktops at 800x600 as the monitors will most likely be
<=15".
If anyone has any tips/suggestions/links/etc. please send them my way.
Anything to save time and/or prevent future problems is welcome. Thanks.

PS: Is it wise to use the latest version of Knoppix 3.2 (2003-05-20) or
should I go the official release of version of Knoppix 3.2 (2003-03-30)?
I guess I'm asking is how do you know what is a stable vs. development
release?
