Update on my problem. T guaranty that the kernel and
modules agree i have completely replaced 2.4.20-xfs with a
clone of config-2.4.20-xfs found in the /boot directory. It
took several hours due to the difference in kernel versions.
However, I have knoppix booting on a 2.4.21-pre5 kernel and
as I suspected - I am still seeing a 2.4.19-xfs INIT
version 2.78 modprobe: can not find
/lib/modules/2.4.19-xfs. So all modules are not loaded,
even though they must match the kernel and have the same
file.o name.
I suspect that /sbin/init has 2.4.19 hard coded in the
binary. So "uname -r"
fails to correctly find the correct operating system
release.
CLUE: On the 2.4.21-pre5 booted Knoppix.iso machine, at a
command line "#".
If I type "uname -r" - it shows 2.4.19-xfs.
Any idea where this might be set?
