SuSE uses a different dhcpclient, on SuSE 8.0 it uses dhcpcd. Knoppix uses pump. May be pump does not work with your Netgear router? 

What if you try apt-get remove pump && apt-get install dhcp-client? That assumes you have installed knoppix on hd :-(
