[debian-knoppix] Knoppix Persistent_home. What's the use?

It seems a new Knoppix gizmo has arrived on the scene. It's called knoppix
persitent_home. I found the reference here:

http://www.centernetworx.de/knx_persistent_home_0.4.zip

And here is the thingy:

http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=155

It is apparently meant to store data on the hard disk... or a thumbdrive.

The problem is you can already save data to a hard drive with Knoppix. Of
course, you have to change the permissions on the drive manually, but I
suppose this could be "fixed" easily. I also suppose Knoppix recognizes
thumbdrives and pendrives? So what's the point of persistent_home?

The idea of using a thumdrive with Knoppix is certainly appealing: with a 128
MB thumbdrive and Knoppix, you really have a computer in your pocket!

It seems persistent home uses a 1 file filesystem. You loose THE file, you
loose ALL files! So, thumbdrives being, I believe, rather delicate, why not
use a true filesystem?

Honestly, I personnaly have no intention of using persistent home, but if
anybody can shed light on the matter, it certainly would help people who want
to save more data than a floppy can contain.

P.s. : Seems to me "ready when it's ready" is getting late again: Gentoo has
had its KDE 3.1 version to compile with gcc 3.2 for one week now!

Regards!
