Sounds like at least three bugs:

 - Screen randomly turning off (presumably because the GPU locks up
and the driver is not able to reset it again). Intermittent,
   present in 2.6.32 and 3.0.

 - "*ERROR* Unknown bits per sample" message: appeared in 2.6.32, not
   present in 3.0. Bug#637814.

 - White, grey, and black stripes with snow when microcode is not
installed: not present in 2.6.32, appeared in 3.0.

Let's continue to use this bug to track problem 1.

Anyway, please report this upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/,
product DRI, component DRM/Radeon, and send the bug number so we can
work on it there.

Yes. Though it might be related --- does blacklisting the radeon
driver and not entering a GUI (shutting down from the console) help?

Thanks,
Jonathan
