FWIW Bastian reported (either in one of these bug reports or on the
mailing list) that Intel worked for him too.

Thanks. Having PCIe support would be a pretty good start IMHO.

Dave's concerns seemed mainly to be about AGP bits rather than PCI, are
they independent(-ish)? e.g. is only a subset of the .../480 series is
needed to enable PCI support?
