Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686
Version: 2.6.26-17lenny2
Severity: normal

Hi,

With this package as the only kernel installed, and hence the running kernel, an upgrade replaces the locally built driver for the e1000e module.

In my case, I have compiled the module locally as the packaged version (0.3.3 i think) doesn't support the option of disabling the MSI interupts and hence the system panics. I have compiled and installed the latest version from the Intel website (version 1.0.2.5) which does support this option. Obviously, this replaces the packaged file. The replacement file is a different size, date/time stamp and a different module version.

By replacing the locally built module a reboot causes a panic.

Shouldn't the package respect local changes such as this and not overwrite the changed module?

Regards,
Tim

I have compiled and installed the latest version from the Intel website (version 1.0.2.5) which does support this option. Obviously, this replaces the packaged file. The replacement file is a different size, date/time stamp and a different module version.

no. only configuration files (under /etc) are treated that way. if you
want your module to be left alone, install it in an 'updates' directory
(see depmod.conf(5)).
