I set up netconsole again today using the Ubuntu directions[1], and from
the look of the eth0 traffic monitor in my panel (with the default route
using it removed, so no normal traffic should have been routed over it),
I think that netconsole was actually sending console messages. Two
problems, however:

1. The machine never crashed today. Either it was a good day, or
replacing 'quiet' with 'debug' in the kernel command line at boot
   suddenly caused everything to work.

2. No kernel log messages showed up at the receiving end. Given the
observation above, I am guessing this is due to my department's
routing and/or VLAN configuration. The wired IP address I get is on
a different subnet (in the 172 private block) than the workstation on
my desk (internet-routable). I followed the directions in the Ubuntu
HOWTO to provide the MAC address of the default gateway for my wired
IP, but still didn't get anything to show up on the listening host.
I don't have another machine on the user-machine network segment to
   listen with.

I'm not sure, therefore, how I can go about getting a error trace. This
laptop does not have a serial port, and the only wireless network I have
problems on is the one at school, so I don't have the option of testing
for problems with access to a wired network I can control.

Confused by the strange files? I cryptographically sign my messages.
