You need to load the usb-storage module for mass-storage devices to work.

notice that with 2.6.12-5 on powerpc, and the proper combination of gnome
stuff and udev/hal/gnome-volume-manager, my usb stick auto-mount without
problem (on powerpc though), so i believe this is most probably a mistake on
your part, or a missing udev/hal/whatever package.
