#3 would be my preference; however, you still have the problem that people
may attempt to compile a vanilla 2.4 kernel w/ gcc-3.3. IMO, this is
something that should be checked for by kernel-package; only allow certain
kernel versions to be compiled w/ certain versions of gcc, or even
override the version of gcc that it's compiling w/. That is, if 2.4.27 is
being compiled, kernel-package internally sets CC=gcc-3.3.
