well that most likely has to do with not loading
the correpsoning kernel modules.
i presume that you are not using hotplug/discover.
please try to modprobe `mousedev' and `psmouse'.
if it works add them to /etc/modules.
on 2.6 /proc/bus/input/devices is your friend,
please post it's content if it still doesn't work.
