You could use the scheme used by amule's maintainer: 1.2.6+2.0.0rc2-1.
For amarok, that would read: 0.9+1.0beta1, which gives much more
information than 0.99.
(Well, since 0.99 already exists, you would have to use 0.99+1.0betaX.)
