non-Latin-1 fonts under KDE 2.2.2

Hello,

I have a computer which runs woody (r1) with the KDE 2.2.2 that comes with 
woody.  I have installed the the following X font packages:
    xfonts-base
    xfonts-base-transcoded
    xfonts-75dpi
    xfonts-75dpi-transcoded
    xfonts-100dpi
    xfonts-100dpi-transcoded
    xfonts-pex
Unfortunately, in KCharSelect only the Latin-1 range is displayed correctly;
all other areas have only questions marks ("?") shown.

Has anybody an idea, what could be wrong here?
