KDE Disappeared During Keyboard Check

I am old to GNU/Linux but new to Debian.  After installing X and KDE, I 
started X and logged in.  The kdm login manager seemed to work fine.  
Everything did, including the mouse until suddenly during keyboard check (or 
possibly exactly at finish of keyboard check), it died.  I was back on the 
command line console..

Any ideas on what to do here?  This was on the console machine, I have not 
tried it from a remote X -query yet..
