trouble with kdeprint

I am having trouble getting printing to work with any of the kde3.1rc3 early 
packages from 

deb http://shakti.ath.cx/debian/kde3.1 ./

In particular it seems that the kdeprintd daemon will not run.  Also it seems 
the binary files 

/usr/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.la
/usr/lib/kde3/kded_kdeprintd.so

will not dynamically load because ldconfig does not accept these files.  This 
points to a bad build of these files.

Does anyone else using these preliminary packages have this problem?  I am 
currently trying to rebuild kdelibs locally to see if it can be fixed here.
