I'm not a member of debian-kde so reply directly if you need to.

I noticed your thread on debian-kde, and (having the same problem), I can 
probably confirm the 0.5/0.9 problems :

$ ldd `which artsd`
	<snip>
	libasound.so.1 => /usr/lib/libasound.so.1 (0x4018e000) 
	<snip>

libasound.so.1 is compiled against version 0.5 :-(

So although the current artsd-alsa package is dependent on libasound2, it's 
actually compiled against version 1!!!
