Re: OpenJDK 8

Hi Thomas,

there’s 8u342-b07-1 (which corresponds to 8u345-ga) in Debian,
but *only* for jessie and stretch ELTS, and (totally unsupported)
in unstable. java.*com* has no bearing on Debian.

Debian has released with OpenJDK 11 since 2019 (buster, bullseye),
and the next release will instead come with OpenJDK 17 as Debian
tracks the LTS releases.

It is not feasible to officially support more than one Java release
per Debian release, considering the effort (including testing, QA,
etc.) and manpower (volunteered) needed.

Note it is possible to install multiple JDKs/JREs on Debian, but
having more than one at the same time w̲i̲l̲l̲ eventually cause problems
(speaking from experience here…). Similarily, while you *can* install
a nōn-default JDK/JRE on Debian (e.g. 17 on bullseye, or my wtf-lts 8
packages on wheezy, buster or bullseye) those releases’ Debian packages
of Java software will not be ready for it because they’re built with
the target release’s supported environment in mind and likely won’t
cleanly work with older JREs (e.g. newer class versions) and break from
newer JREs’ incompatible changes. So these options are mostly for users
running their own software.

To be honest here, if you still use JDK 8 in this day and age, you
probably might want to look into t̲h̲a̲t̲ instead ☺

bye,
