I added this to debian/build.gradle:


allprojects {
    gradle.projectsEvaluated {
        tasks.withType(JavaCompile) {
            sourceCompatibility = JavaVersion.VERSION_1_8
            targetCompatibility = JavaVersion.VERSION_1_8
            options.encoding = 'UTF-8'
            options.compilerArgs.addAll(['--release', '8'])
        }
    }
}


And it still fails with lots and lots of errors like:

package java.lang;
