Hello Brian,

By policy, all software that is distributed by Debian is compiled from
source.  There are a number of reasons for this - just for starters
being able to patch, port, and otherwise modify the software is
paramount the software being considered free (as in speech).  A good
summarization can be found here [1].

Regarding BBmap, is it currently packaged for Debian?  If so, I couldn't
find it; perhaps I overlooked it.  Or are you inquiring here because you
have users who have problems building with BBMap on Debian or Debian
derivatives?  If it's the latter, we can probably help by getting BBMap
packaged for Debian.  Then it will be readily available to users as both
and source and compile (binary) packages.  Feel free to contact me
directly or via the list if you would like to pursue this.
