Hmm. Sorry, I don't know why, then.
A workaround way is to use jfbterm with frame buffer console.
jfbterm is not fast as kon, but still usable for system where
kon does not work well.

When I use IBM Thinkpad i-1200 (cheapest model in Japan at that time),
I modified /etc/kon.cfg to use VGA11 entry instead of standard VGA
entry.
