ma guarda, mi sembra un pochino simile al problema che ho io con un 
philips jackrabbit (un lettore dvd/masterizzatore cd/cdrw).  in genere 
io accendo il computer tenendo staccato questo accidenti.  le volte che 
mi serve lo collego e faccio attenzione a quanto appare in coda 
all'output di dmesg.

a volte (quando non funziona) ho solo un laconico:
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

altre volte ottengo, dopo lo scanning:
